Ukraine becomes The 1st Country In The World With A Drone Military Branch

According to a report, Ukraine has become the first country in the world to create a branch of the armed forces specially for drone warfare called the Unmanned Systems Forces. Ukraine has previously stated it plans to train 20,000 drone operators – that is more personnel than the active personnel Canada has in its regular army. Drones are reshaping the way war is fought and have become a cornerstone for both warring parties in Ukraine.

World’s first “drone force”

The Ukrainian “drone force” or Unmanned Systems Forces will use a range of air, sea, and ground unmanned robotic systems. The branch was officially created on June 11, four months after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a decree ordering its creation.

According to the Defense of Ukraine, Colonel Vadym Sukharevskyi is the Commander of the new branch. He was among the first commanders of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who “began to effectively use unmanned aerial vehicles in combat work and powerful electronic warfare devices produced using his own technology.”

Col. Sukharevskyi (39) has been defending Ukraine from Russian aggression since 2014 and has become something of a legend in the Full-Scale Russian Invasion of Ukraine. According to the ABC, he was the first to give an order to fire on Russian militants in April 2014 as they were seizing the Donetsk region.

In WW1, countries started creating a new service branch, the air force, for the first time (in addition to the traditional army and navy). Since then, more branches have been created. The US, most recently, formed the Space Force in 2019. One example to the contrary was the country of Georgia, which abolished what was left of the Navy branch and merged it with the Coast Guard.

Ukraine: A tale of a disruptive drone war

The use of drones in the Ukrainian military has been exploding. Ukrainian long-range drones are striking deeper and deeper into Russia and appear to have taken out the world’s first fifth-generation fighter aircraft in combat (the Su-57). On the sea, Ukraine’s jet-ski-like drones have been playing havoc with the Russian Black Sea Fleet. They have damaged and sunk several major surface ships and (together with the threat of missiles) forced the remaining Russian fleet into the safety of Novorossiysk in Russia proper.

The drone war started out with humble origins – including an ad-hoc group of drone enthusiasts in Kyiv using their hobby drones to spy on the invading Russians and inform the Ukrainian army via WhatsApp. Since then, drones have been revolutionary.

While America looks to the war of the future using advanced wingman drones, there have been echoes of the past in Ukraine. Drones have brought back the age of dogfights with Yak-52 trainers machine-gunning recon drones down, and, most recently, high-altitude drone-on-drone dogfights.
